Invisalign Can Feel Uncomfortable at First

Despite the modern technological advances that have been incorporated into clear aligner trays, Invisalign involves the process of straightening your teeth by pushing them into a new configuration. This is typically why Invisalign is uncomfortable to wear. In particular, the attachments and clear aligners can create a sense of discomfort for your mouth. For some patients, the fact that Invisalign costs as much as $4,000 makes it difficult to believe that wearing the trays can be uncomfortable. After all, it is an expensive process, so you might expect it to feel great the entire time. Unfortunately, Invisalign is often uncomfortable in the beginning when you first start the process of wearing the aligners for a variety of reasons.

You Aren’t Used to Something Covering Your Teeth

Does Invisalign feel uncomfortable? Yes, at least in the beginning, Invisalign is uncomfortable to wear. Your mouth has to adjust to having a foreign substance in it 22 hours a day. It is going to take some getting used to in the beginning. After a while, you should notice that you no longer feel like taking your trays out of your mouth as soon as you put them back in after eating a meal or brushing your teeth.

You Aren’t Used to the Attachments?

In order to get the aligners to stay in place, your dentist places tooth-colored attachments on your teeth. The attachments are bonded directly to the teeth, so they remain on when you take your trays off to eat, drink, or brush your teeth. As a result, your Invisalign is uncomfortable when the attachments rub up against your lips or the soft tissue directly above or beneath your lips.

The Tightness of the Aligners

If your Invisalign is uncomfortable when you first put the trays on, it could be the simple fact that your teeth are being guided to a new location. The aligners are formed specifically to move your teeth gradually into the desired location. Therefore, your Invisalign is uncomfortable for the teeth that are targeted for movement.
